Training Schedule
Training schedule for a beginer running a 5K on Oct 17 and a 10K on Oct 25?
I would like to know what I should do weekly to get myself prepared for a 5K in 5 weeks and a 10K in 6 weeks. My goal is to finish both races without stopping to walk. Can anyone help make a weekly training schedule for me?
Well, if you want to finish both without stopping to walk you should probably be able to accomplish that now unless you are VERY out of shape or obese. You see, the only reason you would have to stop and walk is if you're running to hard and its getting uncomfortable so Its all a matter of pacing, find a pace that is comfortable and which you can easily carry on a conversation - that is your ideal training pace for most runs.
As far as the actual training, start with whatever you're comfortable initially, maybe 3 miles 3 or 4 times a week, and then add a new day each week unless you found the previous week very touch. Once you hit 6 days or so you can start adding a little mileage to each run, a 10% increase in weekly mileage is generally considered a conservative guidline for mileage increase.
Since you appear to be training to just complete the races and not race them super competitively you probably won't need any short of taper, maybe take 2-3 days off before the race with a short (1-2 mile) run in one of those three days leading up the race.
