First, eating 5 or 6 small meals a day is a proven way to raise your metabolism. I call it the fire analogy. When you make a fire, you want it to keep burning. In order to do this, you keep putting small or medium pieces of wood on it. If you just put one giant log on it, it will smoke and go out. That is exactly what happens to your metabolism when you eat 2 or 3 large meals a day. This is true for all diet and exercise programs.

Second, stay away from simple carbohydrates. There are two kinds of carbs: Simple carbs and complex carbs. Simple carbs are processed. They have little or no nutritional value. White bread, pasta, and sugar are examples of simple carbohydrates. Complex carbs are harder for your body to digest. Therefore, they keep you full longer and burn more calories. They are unprocessed and have much more nutritional value and fiber than simple carbs. Whole wheat bread and pasta are examples of complex carbohydrates.

Third, exercise often and in moderation. Almost any kind of exercise will help you Lose Weight. The key is to exercise every day or almost every day. In order to exercise that often, you need to pick an exercise that you like to do and that your body can handle several times a week. Many people over do it the first day at the gym, then they have mentally defeated themselves. Stop before you are thoroughly exhausted so that you still want to go back the next day.

Has anybody here lost a LOT of weight and kept it off?

I wonder if anybody could tell me a little bit about how you feel now after losing a LOT of weight. What diet or eating program did you do? Did you exercise? What kind of lifestyle did you have before and have now? How do you feel overall? Could you give me some good encouraging words? I am currently doing the Weight Watchers program online. I started last Monday and after 10 days I have lost 10 lbs! I just can't believe it! I am eating very well -- more than I can handle! I still need to lose 70-some pounds. But I am starting to feel really good now. I still can't sleep that great at night. I go to the local YMCA mostly everyday and go on the treadmill for 1 hr, then I lift Weights for about 30 min. Any good advices are always welcome! Thanks everybody!

somewhere along the way many horrible things happened in my life and put me into a deep depression. As a result it was years, as in greater than 10 years since i had been outside my home period. As a result my muscles were so deteriorated I could not stand longer than about 5 minutes and could not even walk about a block, so not leaving my home was justified. By February 2007 i weighed in at about 425 lbs - I was off my doctor's scale. I began dieting 2/07 and by 12/ 07 I lost only 25 lbs.
On 12/26/07 I had a major heart attack, it was brought on because of blockage in my coronary artery, both my bad diet and my excessive smoking ( four packs daily).
they installed 2 stents and told me i had to change my lifestyle or I will die very shortly as a result of this lifestyle.
I called my wife and told her I will never smoke again - throw it all away and she did.
I got out and been on a lifestyle change since then..a work in progress. I changed my diet drastically, I began exercising and I kept it up since then. Today I weigh 268 lbs and I have about 42 lbs to go to reach my first goal 220 lbs.

I buy no prepared food, nothing ever fried, rarely eat pasta. I drink only water - nothing else period. I eat soups that I make from scratch, I eat salads, steammed vegetable, multigrain bread, yogurt. Dairy only about one time every other week, I drink soy milk and have only lean meat when I do eat it.
More fish, learned to like ToFu. Always fresh fruit, and rarely eat potatoes...when I do I eat only sweet potatoes - never white potatoes and definitely no instant potatoes.
My stomach did measure 55 inches round back then, today it is 43 inches. I feel like a whole new person, when i lay down at night my stomach is totally flat .. it is amazing.
Mentally I am still in Fat - Man Mode, my mind still has no got to the place where I am thinking of myself as this new thinner person.. that will come with time, and in the meantime i am losing about 10 lbs every 2 weeks..gradually over that time frame. I work out every day on my cycle ..that is all I own. This month i got a gym membership and began 30 minutes weights, 400 calories treadmill and 600 calories cycle.. Daily.

I keep my diet as Healthy as you could imagine...like I said a Whole New Person includes eatting habits. No such thing of eatting two cheese steak subs at one sitting & a large bag of chips with Pepsi / Coke.

These days my diet is kept below 1600 Good calories daily.

Walk as much as you can, and take steps & hills as often as you can. Your body will burn more on a hill & steps than it will on the level for the same distance. I set my treadmill in the gym on a 15.0 incline & speed at 3.5 ... remember this is only since my heart attack on 12/2007

Through it all I have never smoked again, and i was a heavy smoker like my father was when he was alive, and i smoked heavy since I was 14 yrs...heart attack at 46yrs.

I feel sooo new ... I know now how those people feel on Biggest Loser.... I feel like a new person, or a new lease on life..a second chance. I will never be that size again - - that is a fact. I am paranoid over gaining weight though, If I gain 2 lbs I am busting my butt ( exercising) to get back were I was.
