English Cocker Spaniel owners...good family dog?

Hi, I'm thinking about adopting an 8 month old male. I've heard they like to chew, which is okay as long as it's on the dog toys. Is that a puppy thing he'll outgrow or is that a lifetime trait in the breed? Will I need to permanently put my shoes up or eventually be able to give him free run of the house if I'm gone...? Will my sons toys be safe eventually?
Also how much exercise do they need? Will one long walk a day and ball playing in the house be enough?
I've read some about them online but would like to hear from people who have one not for show or hunting. Just in a family environment. I have a 7 year old boy who is gentle with animals and loves dogs. This would be our only pet and he'd get lots and lots of love.
Any advice and/or comments about what to expect or to take into consideration is greatly appreciated.

Your dog is of an age where his last adult teeth (molars) are breaking through, hence the intense urge to chew. He ought to be given teething articles (kongs, nyla-bones, booda-ropes, etc.) to chew on and be supervised to keep him from sampling the families shoes.

While you are away from home and unable to watch his activities, I would strongly suggest that he be placed in an appropriately sized dog crate, for his own safety.

You wouldn't want to return home and find that he had harmed himself by chewing on an electrical cord, would you?

A good walk everyday and a little ball/stick retrieving outside would be good for everyone involved, two and four-legged.

Enrolling in a puppy class at your local dog club would be an excellent family activity lasting one night a week for several weeks. Usually clubs offer basic obedience and household manners classes as well for very reasonable prices, and are worth every penny. These classes are excellent experiences for proper socialization and bonding between dog and family.

I was given my first cocker as a two year old, more than fifty years ago, and haven't been without one since.
