Is it true the American Military is getting 'soft'?

THIS IS NOT MY OPINION! I heard this from a US Army vet served in Iraq and as a recruiter for 6 years. Along with others who are still serving now and other vets. They say diciplin in the military is a joke. Many people come from boot camp saying it was fun!?!? Is the military mainly the army lowering it's standards to fill numbers? Is it changing the effectiveness of our soldiers? or is it not true at all.

Only US poeple who know first hand please brits and aussies please keep your opinions to your self.
i agree with the saying about army isnt as tough as it used to be and never will... makes perfect sence. Also as the military relies more and more on technology the less tough and diciplined it has to be. 'back in the day' when you had to walk shoulder to shoulder you HAD to have more dicipline then now. But when you can sit 30 miles away and launch missles or artillery shells its requires less.

I have been in the Army for 21 years and I am still in.

When I came in in 1988 the old guys said the same thing about us and the Army at the time, my generation said the same thing about the new Privates and the Army when we were young Sergeants and now guess what...the young Sergeants I lead right now say the same thing about the young kids and the Army. I saw one of my young Sergeants (with about 5 years in the Army) saying that exact thing.

There is an old saying, the Army isn't as tough as it used to be...and it never will be...

Edit: Kentucky..the Marines say the same sh*t...your generation is a bunch af sallies compared to the generation before you...get the picture?

Edit 2: I bet there are very few of you on here that have been in longer than I have so in that line of thinking you are all a bunch of pansies compared to me and what I went through...

Edit: As a former Drill Sergeant (94-96) I will. For starters many of the MOSs never had DSs in AIT anyway. They had TAC NCOs. Our westernized method of basic is questionable at best anyhow. There are better ways to teach discipline than hospital corners and buffing floors. In my opinion they should be kept in the field and not some pristine barracks that they will never see again after basic.

The IDF doesn't have drill Sergeants. The have experienced Sergeants as Squad Leaders in basic who train the new Privates as Squad Leaders and not some omnipotent brown hat wearing monster who talks funny.

Our Army didn't have Drill Sergeants prior to the Korean war. They had regular old NCOs teaching new cohort Platoons of privates that they were going to lead later on. That is a much better method. You would have a much more vested interest in teaching a new Private if he were yours.
